Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Senior Marine Fire Boat Captain, this position is responsible for the operation of the Toronto Fire Boat Service for the purpose of firefighting and rescue work in the waters of Toronto Harbour and Lake Ontario and for maneuvering the Fire Boat during firefighting and other emergency operation:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Being in charge of the vessel, the conduct of the crew while aboard and the duties of the crew other than when engaged in actual fire fighting
- Works in conjunction with the Firefighter Captain at emergency incidents
- Instructs and directs crews in all matters relating to navigation and docking as required
- Oversees the maintenance of the vessel during the period of operation under his/her direction
- Performs other related work as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possesses a minimum of Master 500 Gross Tonnage-Domestic levels
- Experience directing emergency operations
- Experience in ship and small vessels (i.e. tug boat, etc.) handling
- Possession of a Radio Operator’s certificate of a restricted radio-telephone category.
- Successful completion of Marine Emergency Duties and Simulated Navigation course.
- Post Secondary school education or an approved equivalent supplemented by courses and experience
- Experience directing and overseeing a crew.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skill along with good judgement in public and personnel relations.
- Ability to make clear, precise decisions in accordance with established policy.
- Ability to prepare detailed comprehensive reports and complete and maintain accurate records.
- Knowledge of all relevant by-laws and legislation.

Possession of higher weight certificate than specified above would be considered an asset
Assessment of Candidates
- Assessment may include an interview, written and/or practical test.
- Location of assessment to be determined.
A Qualified List of candidates will be established for the Captain Fire Boat position in the Fire Services division and will be in effect for 6 months from the date the list is created. Qualified candidates on the list may be considered when filling future permanent and/or temporary vacancies in this position.
